Messalonskee Trail Riders ATV Club (Oakland Area) Dick Eastman President 130 Skowhegan Road Fairfield, ME 04937 July 31, 2010 Club Newsletter We have been having our monthly meetings at Donnie Daviss Garage. We have new members that have joined and regulars that have renewed their membership. Meetings are enjoyable and a lot of things are discussed. We are trying to get more business members and are waiting to hear back from some that have our membership form. We would like to thank Gwen Ouellette for the Business Certificates. She put a lot of time into doing them and it is greatly appreciated. Trail Maintenance We just discovered that we have our family of beavers back. They moved on when the water went down, have since moved back and are trying to build their area back up again with water. Here we go again. We are going to go out and open up the culverts again so that they dont have all that water to back up again. Oh, well we just have to have something to do and taking care of the beavers seems to be our project for this summer. It costs up about $80 to get rid of one and this time we are hoping that they leave when we let the water down again. Good luck to us!!!! We have had 4 of our members working with the Fairfield Club to get their trails opened. By doing this, it opens our trails up so that we can get out of Town. They have helped build new bridges and excavate some of their trails to a better condition. Once this is done then the trail opens up to be able to go to Norridgewock from the beginning of our trail. We are also working on getting Land Owner Permission with Essex Power, out of Boston, on the Power Lines from County Road to Old Waterville Road. We have to do some work near the reservoir to take off an area that is very rough and put in a bridge. We are waiting to get the paperwork back from them, then on to Brian Bronson, to Risk Management for insurance and then on to DEP for Lurc to go over what we have to do. This permit paperwork is $65 for multi work and they have to approve the work. Lurc becomes involved when there is water involved. Hope to get this paperwork done soon. Dick and Jim have been out harrowing and grading the trail. Making some ditches and removing large rocks. We are also going to have to rent an excavator to do some of the work. We are hoping that it doesnt take long to get this done. Club Rides We have done a ride from Pittsfield to Kingsbury Dam and back. Beautiful day had 12 members that showed up and it was a totally enjoyable day and ride. Other rides were done for some that could not go with us when the ride was scheduled. We try to schedule so that everyone can go but with work schedules, that is sometimes impossible. The last ride we did was done in Strong. We rode 24+ miles and it took us just about all day. Quite a ride. 10 club members. We each packed a lunch, rode to Allens Pinnacle and back to Strong. It is quite a ride, definitely not the smoothest in the world. It is a typical ATV trail. If you ever get a chance to go riding you should take a ride to Allens Pinnacle. It is like being in Gods country. Such a beautiful sight. Mountain ranges all around. We would like to go back in the fall just for the sight of the leaves. We are planning more rides as the fall approaches. It is fun to ride then, a little cooler and not so dusty. Meetings We still hold our meetings at Davis Garage on the Smithfield Road on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7PM.
